I have a bissell steam machine and I never use the soaps that they recommend. A carpet man once told me that those soaps cause the carpet to get dirtier quicker after you use it b/c it's impossible to get it all out of the carpet. It then acts like a dirt magnet. I use oxiclean (1 scoop to the resovoir) with the hottest water I can get out of my tap. It works great and the carpet doesn't dirty afterwards, at least for a very long time.

I use laundry detergent without bleach or fabric softner. 1/4 cup. If my carpet is really dirty I will add some amonia to the solution.

P.S. I recently had a Kirby salesman here. He was going to show me how dirty my carpet is. The water was clear.

just a little fyi....i used the laudry detergent idea combined with a bit of oxyclean and my carpets look awesome...i am going to go back over them with hot clean water just to make sure all teh soap is out.

I htink it cleaned better than anyother solution i've tried and it smells nicer...thanks for the great ideas

When I used to use "Scrubbing Bubbles" Bath and Tub cleaner, I used it as a spot cleaner on the carpet. Worked great for stains. Completely removed a stain if you catch it in time.

I don't use "Scrubbing Bubbles" anymore because it breaks out my skin. Now I dilute my allergen/fragrance free laundry detergent and clean everything with that.

You're going to ask "Why not use gloves?"
Good question! They break my hands out, too.
