Default How Do You Recycle Newspaper?

I recycle my newspaper by using it to wash windows, wrap presents, wrap corn on the cob peelings and catch any drippings from my waffle iron. I was interested in using it to make fireplace logs but dh is afraid it might be a fire hazard. Any remaining newspaper goes in the trash recycle bin. I would really like to find new uses for recycling newspaper.

    * shred it up and use in litter boxes or small animal cages. line the bottoms with it?

    * scrunch it up and use it in your valences to make them pouffy

    * use it for crafts with small kids, they can paint, scribble, colour all over it - paper mache too

    * scrunch it up inside plastic food containers that have been stored closed and have now obtained an odour. put the scrunched up paper in the container and close tightly for a day or two then wash and store open

    * use it for packing items securely for shipping or in boxes for moving/storage - dont forget to wrap glass items well with it!

    * use it kinda like paper towel, after deep frying something - place it on there so the excess grease leaves the food and asorbs into the paper. (dont knock it, ever look at the chips when they come from the fish and chip store?)

    * and lastly, try to recycle it yourself and turn it into pretty 'natural' stationary using blender

We use it to start a fire, but haven't made logs out of them. I did read in my local newspaper (no pun intended) about a man who would go to the recycle center to get newspapers and he would twist layers of them into a log, soak them in water (they must have been THICK layers) then let them dry. Once they were dry he used them as fire "wood".

I also use them to wash windows and to wrap up/pad my Christmas ornaments. Everything else goes in the bi-weekly recycling bin.

Many animal shelters have newspapers on their wish lists.

We use it in our garden around plants to help keep the weeds at bay. It breaks down and adds alot to our crappy Florida soil. It helps hold in the moisture too. We cover ours with barn cleanings and then with tree mulch. In my area several of the tree services will bring you free mulch, they dump it in your driveway and we spend several days spreading it around the yard.
We also tear it up and add it to our mulch bins. Helps to keep the flies and other bugs down. Throw in my kitchen scrapes then cover over with a wad of shredded newspaper.

I just stick it in the recycle bin. Of course, the only paper I get is the free weekly paper, and I only normally look at the Price Chopper ad.

We burn it in the wood stove to start fires. I also save toilet paper rolls and tightly roll newspaper into the paper rolls to make very small kindling logs. They work pretty well.
Of course, we get the paper delivered daily so some of it does just go into the recycle bin. I don't do windows with it because I usually only do the windows once a year.

Before we had our fireplace converted to gas I made many newspaper logs and used them in with the wood in the fireplace. Mine now all go to recycling in a recycled plastic bag.

There's an article in the TWG about how to make fire starters out of newspaper for camping. You twist them into an accordian shape and they burn longer and stronger than crumpled newspaper.
