Problem unique to humid climates
Some of you will relate to this. A lot of the "clutter" in my house is because I live in a humid climate, and can't store a lot of stuff in the garage, attic, or outdoors because it will be ruined. Anything that can be affected by the humidity has to be stored inside. Even with that, I have an attic and garage full of stuff....mostly other people's. I think it's time to start doing freecycle again!

I love the idea of freecycle but in our area we have a certain few that want everything. I have had a pet rescue woman come after things then I found out they sell to make profit for there shelter. If people are reselling for profit, you might as well too. Why not put on ebay, craigslist, or have a yard sale. It would be more profitable. You can even check with your local red cross and see if there are any families that can use misc items.

I can't do Ebay.....long story. I tried to sell some stuff on Craigslist, without much luck. We have a community bulletin board on Yahoo Groups, and I might put some up on that.
I hate having yard sales. Things get stolen, and you still end up with a bunch of crap you have to get rid of somehow. I work weekends, so it's hard for me, unless I plan it a month in advance, and ask for the time off. Then I have to work six or seven days in a row afterwards. I never have made much money on my yard sales. Most of this junk is just that...junk...not things that would be worth wasting a whole day to try to sell.
I'd rather just give it away, especially the stuff that came from other people. I didn't pay anything for it.

Consider it your contribution to their effort
Believe me, every local animal shelter can use every nickel they can get!
I do this every year, difference being - I tell people where the items are going - and I'll give them a tax receipt - maybe you could ask for one?Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die

What we do sometimes when we just don't want to mess with any of it...put it out on the curb.,,people will take what they want out of it and the rest the trash collectors will take.

We have to pay to have our household trash hauled away. You can a 3 cubic yards for free (about a couch and a chair), then you have to pay. Can't remember how much it is a cubic foot. I called on it once, and she said that usually, when someone moves, it costs about $50 to have what is left out there hauled off. Ever since they started that, they've had a serious problem with illegal dumping in undeveloped areas (lots of those around here!)
We have to even pay to have electronics picked up. I had an old microwave I bought for $10 at a yard sale. They wanted $10 to pick it up. I put the whole darned thing in the Herbie Curby...it was a small one...you should have heard the racket when it got dumped into the garbage truck! LOL
This town sucks where utilities and waste are concerned. The county has a "free" pickup every year, where they put out dumpsters at certain places, and you can bring almost anything. No electronics or paint..nothing combustible. People go by to pick up stuff as much as they do to dump! last year, some guy was out there with a pickup unloading a couch into someone else's pickup! LOL

I agree. I would rather just give stuff away, even if I paid good money for it. Selling it always seems like more of a hassle than it's worth. It also seems to me that those who need it most are the ones who are least able to buy it. We're lucky to have a wonderful organization here is town (run by one of the Presbyterian churches) that helps homeless families start over in places of their own. They get most of what I pass on.

"The Lord loves a cheerful giver!" Ok, some of you who are more bible-literate than I may challenge that, but I KNOW I've heard something along that line somewhere - and I'm working on being pretty lovable!
