    Default Bleach question...

Can chlorine bleach be mixed with dishwashing liquid safely?...I was watching "How clean is your house" and they mixed a capful of bleach with dish liquid in the sink to soak the dish rag overnight...I was always under the impression that bleach should not be mixed with other chemicals....anyone know if this is safe???

Here's a link about cleaning up after a disaster, that uses a dishsoap and bleach combination, and talks about what you can't do.

With dish soap mixing bleach is fine. When I was younger washed dishes at a restaurant, and we put bleach in the soapy water, bleach in the rinse water, and then there was another sink of just hot water for a final rinse.

I believe it is just bleach and ammonia that you can't mix because of the toxic fumes that puts off.

“Household products that people use every day, such as bathroom cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, drain clog removers and vinegar contain acids and ammonia that when mixed with bleach or bleach-containing cleaners produce toxic gases,” said DHH Secretary Dr. Fred Cerise. “We want people to be mindful of this potentially harmful risk as they work to remove mold from their homes, and also to be aware of this when they are cleaning with more than one product. It is never a good idea to mix cleansers together.”fficeffice" />

I agree with Yankeemom's warning that "It is never a good idea to mix cleansers together." With so many different dishwashing soap formulas, how would we know that the one we have is okay to mix with bleach?

I mix bleach in my dishwater all the time with Dawn. It's bleach and ammonia you can't mix, because it makes ammonium chloride gas, which is deadly.

I used to buy the Clorox Cleanup spray. I've now starting putting a little bleach in the spray bottle add water--after I'd added to water I add a squirt of Dawn detergen. I use this all the time in my kitchen, for the counter tops, sink, stove top.
