HELP! Lamp oil on my favorite shorts!
First, I'm gonna KILL this kitten! I have a hurricane lamp on the dresser, and the other day, I thought I smelled kerosene in the bedroom. I looked around, and he had knocked over a pile of folded clothes (Yes, I should have put them away) and it knocked the top off the lamp. An old shirt and my favorite shorts were on top of the pile, and ended up on top of the lamp wick, soaking up lamp oil!
I washed them, but now the whole washing machine smells like lamp oil! What do I do???? I cannot figure out how to get that smell out!
I'm gonna run a cup of bleach through the washer, but that won't help my clothes.

Try Dawn dishsoap. I swear by it. It takes grease, make-up, grass stains, old spots that have been dried in. It's worth a try. I put it on the spot, rub it good and wash on warm or hot. Good luck!!

Thanks, Robin, but it's not a spot. It's soaked into almost the whole garment. The kerosene itself is out, it's just the odor that's left. I've washed them twice, once with detergent, and once with detergent, vinegar, baking soda and put more vinegar into the rinse, but no luck. I'm running the washer empty with ammonia in it right now to try to get the smell out of it. I put the clothes into the dryer with two dryer sheets.
If that doesn't do it, I'll hang them outside tomorrow and pray for the best.

i'd still wash them with the dawn. there may be residue that you don't see keeping the smell on them.

How about using something that gets pet urine out of carpets and upholstery? Nature's Miracle works on cat spray--it may work on oil. It has an enzime that "eats" the odor. It isn't expensive and can be found at Petco. DH has used it to get cat spray out of the upholstery of trucks at work and swears by it.
Good luck. Why is it always our favorite clothes that get ruined?!?Robin

Well, I sprayed them with Febreze, but they still have a smell, but not as bad. Someone said to put them into a plastic bag with a small container of white vinegar in it. I'm gonna try that. Guess after this, we'll learn something new! LOL
Someone else said to soak them in baking soda water, 1 cup to a gallon.
