This is what I found in my linen closet!
I have a really big linen closet in my bathroom. The only problem with it is that the shelves are not easy to get to - very long but you have to move everything to get access to the ends.
Today I took everything out of the linen closet. I purged the mismatched sheets, 3 shower curtains that don't match anything in my house and some just nail polishes and makeup that were icccckkkkyyyyy.
Among the useful things I found were this stockpile of missing items:
16 razors
4 tubes of deodorant
4 bottles of shampoo
3 bottles of conditioner
11 bottles of shower gel
8 bottles of scented lotion
2 bottles of calamine lotion
2 1/2 bottles of rubbing alcohol
1 bottle peroxide
2 big containers of vaseline
14 tubes of toothpaste
4 unused toothbrushes
4 bottles of mouthwash
2 complete treatments for headlice (hopefully we will never need them)
2 bottles of sunscreen
2 bottles of insect repellent
1 huge jug of aloe vera gel
4 bottles baby powder
5 packs of feminine products
6 body poufs
7 containers of facial cleansers
5 bars of soap
1 industrial size container fo softsoap
2 bottles hand sanitizer
2 containers of shaving cream
I also made a huge basket of samples for when we travel - lotion, conditioner and shampoos.
I am so happy I did this - I am going to save a crazy amount of money actually being able to [I]find[I] all this stuff when I need it. I don't think I will need to get more of these types of supplies for at least 4 months, and longer on some things!

That's great! Now that you know what you have, you won't buy stuff you don't need.
I cleaned mine out in November. I organized different types of stuff in big Ziploc baggies, now I can see if I have something before I waste any more cash.
I'm FORCING myself to use up all the stuff I bought (to "try out"
) before I buy another thing!

I just did the same thing not long ago, and was I ever surprised at how much stuff we accumulated in there! And here I had been buying duplicates! How did you reorganize? I got some baskets and tried to sort things. It worked fairly well, and I just hope it keeps me from tossing everything together. I like your idea of a sample basket.

What about putting the things in banana boxes and sliding them back in the "hole"?

Zakity, that is pretty much what I did. I had some long skinny plastic boxes in the basement and those got filled with the excesses that we don't need every day - one is full of dental hygiene stuff, one is full of sample sized stuff, etc.
For the rest of the organizing, I put all the razors standing up in a little plastic jar front and center (that is the thing we are always buying dupes of). I have another basket of all haircare stuff, one of shower gels and soaps, and one of lotions. That was all the baskets I had. Then I took a couple of cosmetic bags for things like nail polishes and removers and skin care stuff.
I am going to try super hard to keep this organized. I hate the fact that I have been spendig unneccessary money!
