Bling, Blang, Blung! Fling, Flang, Flung!
Bling: that intriguing new word in our lexicon, meaning over-the-top, excess, guady, flashy, trashy (maybe??), eye-catching decor, dress, accessories, etc.
I watched an episode of "What Not to Wear" and the girl was being chastised for carrying a purse that had plastic and metallic bubbles all over it that flew and clinked when the purse was moved. Bling!
I watched an episode on HGTV where a house wasn't selling, and the real estate pros said that the living room had too much bling. Too much stuff all over the walls and shelves.
My friend loves huge gaudy earrings that dangle to her shoulders. Bling! My granddaughter wants sequins on everything. Bling! My mother hangs every picture she has ever owned, every piece of "art" made from plastic gridding, every _____ (fill in the blank), covering all her walls. Bling!
We are getting ready to sell our house, and I took a critical look around. Did we have the bling factor? I removed some "stuff" from our book cases, took "stuff" off the piano, removed magnets from the fridge, cleared "stuff" off kitchen cabinets, took the kitchy decor out of the bathroom. Bling, blang, blung!! I fling, flang, flung! (so much for good grammar.....)
How about you? Do you have the bling factor in your home? Does it bother you? Do you think too much is being made of bling?Last edited by forHISglory; 03-20-2008 at 01:40 PM. Reason: spelling

When it comes to my house I definitely have a minimalist mentality. I hate clutter! I also hate to dust, so I don't have nick nacks sitting around. I think bare is clean, or at least easier to clean. My mom was just the opposite, she had cabinets full of figurines, pictures on every wall, she was always cleaning....maybe that's why I am the way I am lol.

Wow! We're exactly alike. My mom (and sister and grandma) all have way to much stuff in my opinion. My mom's and sister's houses are always cluttered and unorganized from all their junk and it's always bugged me. Right now I'm living at my parents between jobs, but when I live on my own, I'm definitely a minimalist. I hate having a lot of stuff cluttering up space. I like things neat and organized and in their place.
That's not to say that my house is always clean. Sometimes it gets messy. But in general, I'm definitely a minimalist.
So to answer the original question - nope. I definitely don't have much bling.

I really don't like clutter, but to look around well lets just say I put a two bedroom apartment into a one bedroom. As far as bling. Only one piece. A glass chandalier in my bedroom. No it is not the small type but the big ones usually found in dining rooms. Don't ask, long story. Only have three bulbs screwed in because the light is so blinding. All I can say is what was I thinking. Grant it I got a really good deal on it. LOL

No bling here... very traditional home, walls are clean with minimal pictures
( one nice large clock and one sofa mirror are the only things on the wall)
Nice wood laminate floors I put in myself recently..........
very clean, no fluff or bling.
Just the way I like it.
Took 2 years of de-cluttering to get here and I'm not going back !

I'm a pack rat. It doesn't qualify as bling, it's just too much stuff. I'm working on improving the situation.

A few years ago I fling, flang, flung! I got sick and tired of dusting all that junk. I didn't even like most of it. It was given to me as gifts. I don't keep anything I don't like. I try my best to keep things to a minimum.

One of my neighbors is into BLING, very ornate type decor, reminds me of what Liberaces house would have been like if he wasn't rich.

lol
that stuff is not for me, the more simple, the better.
I also hate loud colors inside my house, I find them too energizing and I'm someone who doesn't need more energy.

Funny you should post this this weekend.

I wouldn't call what I have bling, but it is definitely the accumulated JUNK of 18 years of living in this home, and 24 years of raising kids (and dh, my biggest pack rat).
This morning I started FLINGING, and flang and flung.
My sister's teen daughter's hs girls' crew team is having a rummage sale this coming week, and I saw my chance to get brave for a change!
Like FLYlady says, if I didn't LOVE it, or it was of no use (or hadn't been used in a year or two) it was OUTA here!! I have 8 boxes so far and I haven't finished the basement and the boys' rooms. (don't worry I would never throw away anything they care about
)
I emailed my sister to bring the truck, not her small car. And not to kill me
when they come around doing pick-ups this week.

Not much bling or clutter here that's visible unless you hit the all male areas. I try to routinely clear out clutter as I feel spastic when there is chaos in my home where I want to relax. Now the attic, the garage, and the boys' rooms .....lets just say I try not to look.
~The boys rooms I push to stay claen but I don't make them pitch anywhere near what "I" think should go.
~The garage I've given up on. I don't even enter it anymore.
~The attic was hit a couple of years ago but will get hit again this summer as "stuff" seems to have snuck up there.

I've said it b4 here, and I say it again...."I HAVE A VERY STRONGLY DISLIKE TO CLUTTER AND STUFF".
I have some pics on the bookshelf, and a few decorative items that my mom got when she was visiting, cause she thought my house looked "bare".....I call it clean!

GG (TheRootedNomad)-- you talked about 'all the male areas'. I hear ya.

I have a 24 year old living 2000 miles away and I still don't know where to put some of his junk. And DH! Don't get me started on him..........
But I still went into their rooms this weekend and tossed. If I saw a shirt that I hadn't seen on them (when they are home from college--my two ds's) it went in the bag that's going to the rummage sale a DNiece's school.
I now have 10 boxes and 3 lg. trash bags of stuff for my sister to pick up.
The hard thing is the games and college books and things just strewn all over certain areas. I can box things and bag them, but I have no idea where to put them. The 'guys' stuff, I mean.

I'm definitely against clutter. I've always been a flinger. Lately, however, I've been going crazy getting rid of things. I've been a freecycling fool and eBaying things off and just generally cleaning out. There are things that I've held onto through years of decluttering and I finally decided it was time to let go. Yesterday I tossed a heart-shaped glass container with my name engraved on it and the date of a wedding I was a bridesmaid in during 1996. I don't use it, but was hanging onto it for sentimental reasons, but the truth is, I don't even talk to the girl whose wedding it was anymore. So, I chucked it and man, did it feel good.

For the 3rd day in a row, I fling, flang, flung.
I entered the dreaded basement this morning and worked till afternoon at about 2pm. The garage is so full of stuff to go to the curb this week! Old pool toys, deflated floatation rings, JUNK!
This is addicting...........feels SO GOOD!

I suppose I used to have a great amount of bling around my house, now I'm probably down to about a half bling. I am a collector and have 2 china cupboards full of bling, but that bling isn't going anywhere until I do.
