Default Please enlighten me about pole beans...

I'm a garden novice, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Everything I've read says to plant pole beans around a pole or at the base of a trellis, etc. I've planted them around the base of a pole, but do I need to tie them to the pole? It seems that I would, but I don't really know.

They should climb the pole by themselves.

That's true. I used a metal tomato stake for mine and I had to help it climb up the metal, I guess because it's slick. I just used clothes pins to hold it until it reached the next metal ring.

they should climb all by themselves but sometimes I get beans or peas that don't climb. You can loosely tie them with twin or cloth to train them to climb.

Hubby plants his with the corn and they grow up the corn stalk. It's kinda cool. But, yep, they climb on their own. Enjoy your beans!

Neat idea! I would never have thought of that.

Yep, it's a twist on the three sisters planting.

Hubby does a lot of companion planting. Our nephews said the other day that our garden looks like a jungle and they can't believe how much we plant in our space... and how well it does. Hubby gets all the credit for this! He knows what needs to be planted with each other for the best benefit.

I believe he recommends the book, "Carrots love Tomatoes" for ideas on companion planting.
