    Question Re-doing our garden pond...

We have a small pond in the backyard and DS had some friends over the other day, and they thought it would be fun to throw rocks into the pond. Well, we had a soft plastic liner, and wouldn't you know it...they poked a hole in it.

So, now we are going to re-do it (which is ok, becuase I've wanted too, just needed an excuse) and get one of the hard plastic liners for it.

I have been searching online for ideas of how to do it (landscaping, etc.).

Just thought I would post here to see if anyone has a garden pond and if they would like to share pics to help me out with ideas and brainstorming of how to put it together!

yes, we had one of those plastic ones and what a PITA!. Oh it was great the first year. Frogs moved in, then the snakes.. a real eco-system.

Until the algae took over. string algae! Stuck to the walls, clogged the pump for the little fountain... I grew to hate that thing because I wound up having to help clean it and that stuff doesn't come off very easily, even with a power washer.
I'm sure there are chemicals to stop that but the wife didn't want to use them... glad its gone.

I hope someone here can give you a more positive post..sorry.

I feel your pain Russ. The second year, I had problems with algea. Lesson learned, the third year, I was sure to get the "proper" algea to keep the bad algea away, plus we got some plecos...(ok, I can't spell it...sucker fish), tadpoles and eventually frogs that kept everything under control.

Luckily, I haven't had to deal with snakes...maybe because of our dogs, I don't know. But if I ever get a snake in the pond...I'll be moving

We made our garden pond out of an old satellite dish. It has frogs, fish, lily pads and the occasional snake. We don't have a pump on it and yes it gets algae, but all things in balance... we bought some algae eating fish to go in there.

I'll have to see if we have any current pictures of it and if not, I'll go take some. It's actually kinda cool.

Dave and my fil have built 3 ponds--2 outdoors and 1 in my basement.

Do you have any questions in particular? I was never really interested in them because it was an obsession for them, and I became a bit resentful LOL

No biggie.. we got rid of it, had a 3/4 acre one dug and put BIG fish in it. I get to fish and the wife and her dogs have a place to swim.

What kind of liner did you have in your pond? It might be easier just to throw an edpm liner in there. They're pricey, but last a long time. Mine's been going strong for 8 years now. You might as well dig a bigger hole while you're at it! LOL
