    Default Egg question

We have started buying our eggs from a lady with chickens that roam on her land. I was prepared for the yolks to be darker but I've noticed that sometimes the whites have something in them that look like little floaters ( not sure how else to explain them) what is that and are the eggs okay?

Are they white and look like a blob with a tail? I think I know what you're talking about and I get them in my eggs alot.

Yes they do look like that. It's like the whites have little thick spots in them.

The white string things are called chalaza they hold the yolk in place inside the white, most eggs have that to some degree. I have fresh eggs and sometimes there are random specks in the whites, sometimes red dots and such. I think its all pretty normal. I'm sure they are probably pretty fresh, eggs can last months.

That just means the eggs are fertilized. Unfertilized eggs won't have any spots in them. If left unrefrigerated, the eggs will be fine for about 10 day before they get iffy. After that, it would be best to refrigerate them, cook them, try to incubate them or toss'em.

If they are fertilized, does that mean they will develop into babies??

It depends on whether or not the rooster is any good and, of course, the eggs would have to be incubated. My dh and I raise chickens on a small scale and we hatch our own most of the time. I don't want to hijack this thread, so if you are interested, let me know and I will post to a new one. Have a blessed day!
