Bumper crops?
I am now seeing that I am going to have way too much to can or freeze. I am considering calling the local rural food bank and see if they would consider taking the excess. Do they do this sort of thing? Anyone know?

ours won't take from someone that hasn't been inspectef for health and sanitation.
You could try retirement homes, and hospices, Womens shelters....camps.

I agree trying local women's shelters or even posting on your local craigslist and freecycle groups... darn if I lived closer I would take some off your hands for sure!

See if there is a Plant a Row for the Hungry org somewhere around your home. They set up at the farmer's market here and the food pantry takes the vegetables. The Salvation Army will take it here because they feed lunch everyday. Call around or freecycle it. I took in 14 lbs of zuccini last year.

Soup kitchens will usually take any fresh veggies because then they'll wash and cook them.

our food pantry will take fresh vegetables. . . call and check.
We also have an "Abundance Table" at church where people can leave produce, magazines, clothing, - and then you can take something if you need it. So you might check with some local churches, etc.

Our food pantry will take them. I've already asked. She said they would be THRILLED. If we have too much I will definitely take them there. Another thought would be a family you know is having troubles. Maybe put some goodies in a basket and drop it off at their doorstep. No note, no door bell ringing - just drop and go. Maybe a note but not signed.
