    Default A chicken question...calcium related...

I am looking into the options for getting calcium into my layers. I know it'll be awhile before it is a dire need.

My cockatiels get their calcium from cuttle bones. (dried cartilage from a cuttle fish. it scratches easy) Now...could I grind this up and feed it to my hens?

here's more info on cuttle bones if you aren't familiar with it. i could crush it to pieces with bare hands, i could get uniform pieces with a blender or such.

It should work. I remeber my dad crushing eggshells when I was little and feeding them to the chickens for extra calcium - you want them crushed so they don't start eating their eggs.

Everyone that I knew of that had chickens always fed them their crushed shells. One lady would scramble up the extra eggs and feed those to her chickens too. She said that she scrambled them to make sure they didn't look like "eggs" so that they wouldn't eat their eggs.

That's what we use also. When I get too many eggs and can't sell them, I hard boil them, smash them, shells and all and feed to the birds.
