    Default Devil's Trumpet

    http://www.durgan.org/ShortURL/?KCUBS 13 July 2008 White Datura Inoxia (Devil's Trumpet)

A.k.a. Devil's Trumpet, Horn of Plenty, Downy Thorn Apple (Datura metel) thorn-apple, devil's apple, devil's trumpet, angel's trumpet, stinkweed, green dragon, apple of Peru, Jimson Weed; Devil's Apple; Thorn Apple; Stinkweed; Devil's Weed; Malpitte; Moonflower; Toloache.

This plant self-seeds, and I usually grow one or two, usually seeing how large I can make it grow.

Many flowers, which last for one day.

This plant produces numerous seeds, and self seeds yearly.

The devil's trumpet self seed. There are several throughout my garden. In full sun they thrive, but even in partial day sun they do well. Some years I start in pots and put out when it warms up, to get a head start in our short growing season.

My grandfather called these Angel's Trumpet. He planted them at my mom's house when he moved in with us in 1972. They continue to come up every year. They are spectacular and the smell intoxicating. Too bad they are poisonous. If I lived in a rural area, I'd grow them again.

Don't they bloom at night? There's a difference between those moonflowers and the jimson weed. One is a vine, the other is a bush.

The flower only last one day. But they have many flowers. Here is the 2006 effort.
