Default Spanish Onions dried for storage.

http://www.durgan.org/ShortURL/?QDFKW 28 September 2008 Spanish Onions dried for storage.
Next year as the onions bulge from the ground they will be covered with mulch. I notice the tops stay green longer, hence possibly larger bulbs. As to exposing to Sun to reduce the sting, I have drawn no conclusions, and will pursue the matter no further.

Pull, dry, store... sounds pretty easy.

Do they need to be dried in a dark place, or just a dry one?

My view is dry and hot, hence the shed or outside on very hot days in the shade, avoiding hot direct sun..

Durgan, how many hours per week do you garden?

Will you store the onions in that tub?

I just play around in the garden, instead of watching TV. The time is mostly walking around figuring how much grass I can remove, and plant something useful or pretty to view and to feed the bees. With modern tools most of the labour has been reduced to manageable proportions.

The onions will be stored in the tub, since it is convenient, and the layers are not too deep, so there will be reasonable air circulation.

Nothing to watch on TV anyway. How much property do you have?

I think you and I are in the same zone hardiness. I'm straight across I69 due west of Port Huron.

Durgan your onions are georgous! I was wondering about onion storage ie., dry, dark or both. Thank you for the information you provide and the beautiful pictures.

Just dry is the main criteria, and filter through them periodically and remove any soft or rotten ones.Good air circulation and low humidity also helps. Dark or light doesn't matter.

You live in a nice growing area. I am in Zone 5b up on the Niagara Escarpment. The property is 0.4 of a acre. almost rectangular shaped.
