Humane Society Chicken
Look who I came home with! She's been there since the 7th.No one has claimed her or even asked to see her. poor thing. they named her Jade. She's laid them a few eggs. None for us yet, but I imagine it'll be soon enough.
The plastic you see in the pic goes 3/4 of the way up the sides of the run to protect them from driving snow and wind. It isn't encasing them in a wall of plastic.
She's super sweet thus far and has run into the girls we already have's run repeatedly. I may have to give up her quarantine and just let her hang with her new gal-pals.~~ Missy ~~

My big white rooster, Gunther, came from the county pound.
He has since fathered about a dozen more chickens. When he first came to my home, it was just him and a passle of hens. Now he has four or five sons out there for competition, but he keeps them in line.

This makes me want chickens, too. Sadly, DH is deathly allergic to chickens. I keep lobbying for a goat, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I had to sign paperwork for Gunther (my rooster) that he would not be used for food.

I've been thinking of having chickens for the last six months. I got the yard (all fenced) and climate for it.
When my sister lived near downtown San Jose she had four chickens and she always had lots of fresh eggs. At night she kept them in a small 12'x12' pen area and would open the gate to the backyard during the day. The hens were death on all manner of insects in the backyard so they did help out.
They took but a couple minutes care and unlike a dog you could leave them for a day or two. No roosters though, they make the noise.

A lot of cities will allow a couple in town as long as there aren't any roosters.
your local humane societies and town halls can tell you if they are allowed.
