still havent planted garlic..its sprouted
now, what do I do? I have it in a cool place, but its all getting shoots.
I havent planted yet because its been 60-70 deg. lately. we havent had but a jift of snow, & doesnt look like we will for awhile.
If I plant it now I'm sure it will start growing. My poppies are about 5 inches tall, & its the end of nov.!!Pine trees, with their needles pointing up to heaven, represent everlasting light and life.

I have no advice for you but I'm curious to know what you decide to do and how it turns out because I would like to plant some garlic too. It's been cold but the ground is not frozen yet here.

Garlic is pretty winter-hardy. I'd get it in the ground now, and let it winter over. At worst, it'll get a little frost damage from the snow, but it will take off again as soon as the ground warms up. Planting it in the fall helps to guarantee you get good leaf development before it starts to put energy into making bulbs. (The better the leaf development, the more uniform and tasty the bulb.) I planted mine about a month ago, and it is growing like gangbusters right now.

Hi!
I live in FL and no ground freezing here. The way we go thru garlic, I'd LOVE to plant it. Do you think I can I do it in a pot outside? Thanks for any advice!

Garlic can be grown in containers, but just remember that you'll (hopefully) have a big bulb, so put it in one big enough for it to grow in. Garlic also likes well-drained soil, so make sure your pot has drainage and use a nice loamy mix. Also, it isn't a good idea to plant garlic (or any veggie, really) in the same soil over and over, so rotate your cloves into new soil/pots to avoid any problems with disease.

I like the way onions and garlic look when growing, I love their flowers. Anyone that says gophers and voles/moles don't like them .... doesn't have the varmints or they have never planted onions and garlic!
So I tend to plant them in pots or raised beds with serious wire under them. I have had elephant garlic in the same container for years but... I do dig them up, add more compost and castings and replant the largest bulbs and keep the small ones to use.
just a fun site of photos of garlic being grown

garlic or onion scapes (the flowering part) are delicious when sauteed!

I've got mine in a pit dug out of solid rock. I am hoping that keeps the ground squirrels at bay!

This is interesting because dh wants to plant garlic next year, along with asparagus. We can't plant now, so it will have to wait until next fall.
