I really enjoyed all of these stories. Some think I'm crazy when I tell them I wish I could live the way these people did way back then. They lived simply and knew what was important.
My grandparents were from Italy. All I know is that they came over on a boat when they were very young. We lived about 6 hours away from them and I hate that I didn't get to be as close to them as I would of liked. I always wonder what stories they could of told me.

I am a huge fan of genealogy for finding family information. Here is a web site that you can check out for free to find many of the old homesteading (patent) land records. Its free (printable from the site), you can search for different states and hopefully find some family information on record that will tell you where your family may have recorded land patents!
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Default.asp?
I have found one of the best ways is to just put in a last name, that way it brings up more information.
Hope this helps you find some of the records for your families that recorded land homesteads and patents.

I love these stories. My Grandparents were cotton & wheat farmers in southwest Ok. They always had a huge garden & fruit trees. The cellar was always full, as Nannie canned EVERYTHING. Several years after they sold their farm & moved to town, they were in their 80's, I sent a fruit basket to them for Easter. A month or two later I went to visit and Nannie was cooking breakfast. She told me to be sure and try the apple jelly she had canned. I said "Nannie where did you get fresh apples ? She replied, " remember that fruit basket you sent, there was more fruit in there than we could eat so I canned the leftovers". I sure wish I would have paid more attention when she was trying to teach me how to live.

One of my relatives has a story in one of the old Ohio history books of how he was an indentured servant and worked on a farm for 7 years and later became a land owner himself. My great-grandmother (Young) Eberhardt also tells how her mother and Sister both ran boarding houses in the Canton/Massillon area. She would tell how her mother would raise vegetables and cross the canal to sell them. You really have to admire their work ethic.

Great, great thread!
My grandmother grew up on a farm in Northeastern Ohio, near Ashtabula, and in the early years, I would have to say they were homesteaders. I remember many of her stories from growing up. Loved them.
Also, GREAT website to find the land holdings!!!My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

My Grandmother and her family migrated from boston ( I think), in the "great wagon train" across the country to Montana. I think she was just a bitty baby when they did that. I have all the photo albums and journals from my great aunts of the trip.
My Grandpa's family was originally in Ontario through Chicago and then onto Montana. as well, not sure where though.
and my Mom's family were the Hamptons - as in general Wade II, and Wade Hampton III - Virginia, South Carolina and that area in the Civil war. They migrated later to Montana via California where my great (don't know how many times) grandpa was the first baker in sanfransisco. The other side are the Horrom family.
I've got a pretty extensively researched family. I've traced it back 15 generations and most are into the US.
Dh's family is all canadian, some of the first settlers out here.
