I am doing a full fledged Victory Garden last year. Partly as a way to beef up the pantry, but also as part of an ongoing self sufficiency education for our kids. http://video.google.com/videosearch?...um=4&ct=title# Victory Garden Movie USA is a video of a garden that seems silly, it's so old and out of date, but I'd love a garden like that.

We are very interested in having a garden this year, but we don't have alot of property. We are looking at doing some container gardening....but I would love to be able to plant potatos and corn. We got to figure out what we are doing with this....

You can plant potatoes in a big box. as long as it's nice and deep, you can do it. You can grow green beans, carrots tomatoes herbs, lettuce all in containers. They just have to be big ones. A simple wooden box lined with plastic( so the box doesn't rot).

You can also plant potatoes in trash cans. We did that years ago when we were short on space.
Edited to say! Thanks for the link!Last edited by Persimmon Lace; 01-12-2009 at 05:34 PM.

potatos in a garbage can? Really? Not to sound stupid, but how do you do that? Metal can or plastic? Just fill it with dirt and then the plants? More details please....that would be so cool.....
(Just to add I have never had my own garden, from start to finish)

They have a pretty good description of growing in a barrel. I used an old galvanized barrel. I put holes in the bottom and used clean sawdust mixed with top soil for the growing medium. We got about 20 lbs each from several barrels. It was so easy. The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson

You can also take a 30 gallon plastic trash can saw it in half and plant the potatoes in there. When it's time to harvest just turn the tubs over. (Lasagna Garden-shows a photo)
One year our bff and us planted some in a 50 gallon drum--just to see if we could. Yep it worked. Not many potatoes but it did work.

Soooo much to highlight on this thread. It is saved to favorites.
Among other things, I am determined to plant potatoes and am searching for the best method.
Thanks, everyone! (Off now to surf the hyperlinks!)

Hmm... going to search for ways to plant. We have to move my raised beds this year, so putting soil in some barrels won't be a big deal. I'm also planting at our campsite, they have awesome soil there, so plan on using it! Make a small jungle out there..lol. Any tips for raised beds and container gardening appreciated!

I want to thank you for leading me to discover the Frugal Living Forum with this post. I just joined. I had great success in growing potatoes in my half barrel. In fact, I am still harvesting them. The barrel has been an excellent winter storage place. The potatoes stay much firmer than those I pulled and stored indoors. Next season I plan to do two barrels. My only problem is that the barrels are very heavy on my floating dock. I may need to find a shore location, but one not too far from the water. I hate carrying buckets up the hill. -- Margy
