Default What a mess, but aLOT of fun!

Dave said "Hon, I think we're true homesteaders now" because we made suet cakes yesterday. We bought a side of a pig from his sister and she gave us a grocery bag full of fat and we dicided to go buy some cracked corn and peanuts and melted down the lard and added some black oil sunflower seeds. OH so messy!! but we felt good doing it! I wish we had saved all those plastic forms from all the suet cakes we bought. We used cake pans and cut them to size. My hands shouldn't be chapped for years! LOL!

Sounds fun! What did you pour them in to mold them?

We poured them into every cake pan we own. We put them outside to solidify then brought them in and cut them into 4" squares. Then we froze them. We put one out this morning and they repeatedly come back to feed on it, so I think it was a success!
I have always fed the birds but now Dave has as much fun with it as I do.

Yes it's alot of fun & satisfaction to make your own suet to feed the birds! enjoy having fun changing the recipe by addind diff stuff you have on hand like peanutbutter, cranberries, nuts etc.

Oh, that sounds like so much fun! When I lived in NY, I always worried about the birds in winter because they have to eat about 10 times (or so) their weight a day to survive. Kudos to you for helping them!

we ended up with 46 4" squares & 2 9" squares. We were going to make more of the large ones but kept forgetting and just cutting the 4" ones. It made us feel really good watching them take big chunks off and devouring it. 100% natural, nothing but goodness for them.
