Where do you order your seeds?
Where is a good place to order seeds? I'm looking for veggies, herbs, and perennials. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I do want a decent germination rate.
I have a gift certificate to Park Seed, but Garden Watchdog doesn't have many good things to say about them. So I was thinking about just getting my seed starting supplies from them, and seeds somewhere else.
Of course, if you've ordered from Park Seed with good luck, I'd like to hear about it

I've never heard of Park Seed. My favourites are Territorial and Seeds of Change. I've never had a complaint with either, and I've used them for probably 10 years.

I'm trying to go all heirloom this year and I'm trying to not give my hard earned $$ to Monsanto and other companies that genetically modify their seeds. Up until this year, I've only used companies owned my Monsanto and genetically modified seeds, so now I'm having a reverse experiment.
Just a personal experiment. I'm hoping to learn to collect seeds from my garden that I put in this year. That way I wont keep spending so much $$ on seeds! Wowza, I spent some $$ last year. So I'm working on being frugal in the garden this summer.
That being said, I do have some left over seed that are not heirloom, but I'm going to grow the plants and take cuttings off, to get more bang for my buck.

I always try to buy my seeds at our local garden supply store. I try to patronize locals businesses as much as possible. They have seeds, sets, live plants, supplies, fertilizer and really good advice. I have not had a problem with germination with their seeds except for the 2005 parsnips. How do you get ONE parsnip out of a whole row? If you have a local store such as this, I would check it out before ordering.

I buy Territorial Seeds from my local Nursery because they do well here near the ocean and order Heirlooms/Open Pollinated seeds from Bountiful Gardens (because they are grown 30 miles away) and from Pine Tree Garden Seeds because they are very reasonable (most are .95 cents a packet). If you are trying to avoid accidentally giving money to Monsanto here is a list of seed companies that are safe to buy from:
Sand Hill Preservation Center
Seeds of Change
Seed Saver’s Exchange
Renee’s Garden
Baker Creek Seed Co.
Peaceful Valley Farm Supply
Abundant Life Seeds
Underwood Garden Seeds
Bountiful Gardens
Kitchen Garden Seeds
High Mowing Seeds
Heirloom Acres Seeds
Garden City Seeds
Tomato Fest
Pinetree Garden Seeds
Mountain Rose Herbs
Southern Exposure
Amishland Seeds
Tiny Seeds
Local Harvest
Heirloom Seeds
Fedco Seed Co.
Diane’s Flower Seeds
Wood Prairie Farm
Victory Seeds
Wildseed Farms
Horizon Herbs
Heirlooms Evermore Seeds
Territorial Seed Company
Richters Herbs
Lake Valley Seeds
Organica Seed

Thank you for this list. It's the largest non Monsanto list I've ever seen. Maybe Sara will post it as a sticky for all us gardeners interested in Heirloom seeds.

Love the great seed list Hestlauss!
thank you!
from that list i particularly like to order from www.heirloomseeds.com
i spent a bit on seeds there there last year & did very well
especially w/ bean seeds...i have saved enough from 7 different kind of beans for this years seed & for sharing.
one of the reasons i ordered from heirloom seeds is that they are the closest i could find to my area...they are in PA.
I had some shipping problems & they called me on the phone & e mailed me to get it worked out. i will be checking out other places from the list, but know i will order again from this place.

Thanks for the seed list. Gardening and altered seeds seems a contradiction.

I love bakers creek...
we live about 1 hr away from them and every spring and fall they have a "get together" and have all their seed packets for $1 each...
there are so many people there, you can't believe it. If you don't live close enough for the gathering, I highly recommend them as a mail order product...they have good products, and they work hard to get heirloom and unknown seeds in, their website is wonderful to look at and read about all the seeds and how the got them and where they are from...
I don't believe I am allowed to post a link but it is rareseeds dot com
they also have a forum there that my hubby goes to all the time that is suppost to be good. There is also some trading/selling and such of seeds/roots on the forums.

I've been ordering from Heirloom Seeds for several years, now. We get great seeds from them.
