The cover crop of red annual clover was planted in 2008 as space became available upon removal of vegetables. This last week of February 2009 was quite warm for several days, and the snow has disappeared for now. The clover growth has been effectively killed. The clover residue will be rototilled into the underlying soil when Spring arrives, some time in April.
A cover crop of clover fixes some nitrogen into the soil, adds some fiber, food for worms, inhibits weed growth, and reduces localized erosion. In other words builds up the garden soil.Durgan

Thanks Durgan. This is something I plan to do this year. I've already ordered hairy vetch to plant. I'm really interested to see how it works.
