Heirloom tomatoes taste way better than the hybrids, plus you can save the seeds, so I would advise people to go with heirlooms as much as possible. Pumpkins and other cucumber/squash type things need a certain amount of heat to germinate so those might take longer. .

I save seeds from my own beans, peas, tomatoes, etc. all the time. And except for one year all the potatoes I ever grew were ones that were sprouting in the basement. Yes, they treat most potatoes with something to control their sprouting. But if you are getting nice sprouts then that stuff obviously haven't don't much and you can go ahead and plant them. I got many huge potatoes last year by growing just one sprouting potato in a children's pool full of compost.

I also have only grown garlic from my own that is sprouting, same principle. If it is actually sprouting, then of course you don't need to worry that it won't sprout because it is treated with something. I also grew tomatilloes from seeds I saved from a tomatillo from a grocery store. Works just fine.

With what is going on with HR875 and SR425 I would want to buy as many heirloom seeds as possible. Which is what I am doing.

The problem I have had with starting seeds when I first started was warmth and light. I would get them to sprout to then lose the sprouts when trying to get light at my windows they would get cold.

I have found some reading on starting seeds that may help you.
