    Default General Seed Starting Method

    General Seed Starting Method

http://www.durgan.org/ShortURL/?LJPNG 17 February 2009 General Seed Starting Method

General seed starting method. Containers are plastic cups with drain holes made with a soldering iron. Coffee filters contain the earth and tend to keep the roots together, when transplanting. Plastic bags create a mini-greenhouse that means no care until germination occurs. The marking system functions for more than 2 years without undue fading.

Experience has indicated that germination rates approach 100%, and this method is ideal for the small home garden grower. The seeds selected for this example are luffa.

Thanks Durgan. I'm looking forward to reading your posts again this year!

I have petunias planted and on a heating mat til they germinate. I got a little over zealous and planted broccoli & cauliflower last weekend but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them as it is WAY too early for my zone. Maybe I'll try to plant them out and cover them. I wasted the seed if I can't make it work somehow. Wish me luck

It is hard to wait once the sun starts to shine, and the snow disappears. Broccoli & cauliflower can take a lot of abuse, and will grow under most circumstances. I even try to get some into the garden about the 15 of April, when we have a few warm days. Sometimes with great success, and others a bit of a flop.

I think that the broccoli & cauliflower will be fine...I keep them in such a cool basement that they are growing very slowly, so they may be pretty stocky
