garlic
last summer DH and I were driving around and came across a sign for garlic. IT was a guy that grew and sold it from his house. (well, his yard) I bought a pound and just used the last of them and kept the last clove to sprout.. It is already sprouting on the top and would like to keep it to grow another clove. I don't know much about growing garlic and thought someone might be able to help me. I do know that one clove grows one bulb, right? I wish I had saved more to grow more. That would be one more thing I wouldn't have to buy again! I'd grow enough to last all winter.

Garlic should be planted in the fall or very early spring (like now, if the ground is soft enough). It is harvested in late summer (August?) depending on your climate.
You need to look up what your hardiness zone is, and then look up information on specific plants for your zone. http://www.garden.org/zipzone/Use it up, Wear it out,

I plant my garlic in the fall, but would try putting it in the ground now if I hadn't put it in yet. Better to try than no garlic at all.
I have had good luck putting other bulbs in the ground at this time so why not garlic?!
My garlic did really well last year and I have enough to last me till the next harvest. This year I planted three different types, one early season, one mid and one late. Hope it does as well as last year because I really love my garlic!!
Yes one clove makes one head and it stays fresh if you keep it in a cool dry place. I plan to dehydrate some this year and see how that goes. Mostly I roast it and then use roasted garlic.Last edited by mzpepper; 02-23-2009 at 03:18 PM. Reason: added another thought

Thanks for the info! I'm in Ct so there is still snow on the ground. I don't think I could plant anything yet. I will check out the zone link and see what it says for my area. Thank you!

So when you plant it, are the sprouts buried in the soil, or should they be poking out? I use fresh garlic almost everyday and sometimes what looks good at the store, turns out to be lousy when I peel it. So would love to know about this too.
Thanks!

Every spring I buy an extra head of garlic, split it into cloves and tuck the cloves around the edges of my veg. garden. Here it takes a full year to get more, but in the early spring I usually have a lot. i had so much last year i gave some to the neighbors.
