    Default Vegetable container gardening..

I've been thinking of starting a few vegetable plants in containers.
Here's a site I found with lots of helpful information:
    http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/e...container.html

Does anyone have any experience with container gardening?

Thank you so, so much! I am so not ready for a big garden, but I was thinking along the lines of containers to "get the knack" for it. Maybe someday I'll actually graduate to real, in the ground planting, but for now I think this is the answer for me!

Can't wait to get back to the site and read all about it!

Thanks for this info. We live in a new subdivision that still has an active homeowners association and we aren't allowed to have gardens. I hate it but dh had already decided to build here before we were engaged so I'm stuck with their rules. I can't have my normal garden I'm used to so thought I'd try container gardening this year. I tell you what though if the economy keeps going south I'll put up a privacy fence and do a garden anyway next summer.

    great information.

I had a container garden last year. Tomatoes, lettuce, all kinds of herbs, onions, and garlic. I had great luck with tomatoes, herbs, and some lettuce. I am going to a deeper container for the onions this year. I think they were just to close together. otherwise I everything turned out well.

I'm a trying squash, potatoes, peppers and beans this year. amongst the above that I did last year.

I'm glad that I found this tiny (so far) but mighty thread - just what I needed. Am soooo inspired by those who have 'real' in the ground gardens, but just cannot do so at the moment. As I've said elsewhere, it seems as if I love to buy seeds and then stop there.

This weekend I will start small.

Please send ideas and pictures along as your gardens get going. I'm a visual person and love to 'see' what others are doing.

    Have a great day!!

My "pet" heirloom tomato plant was doing great in his big pot on the front porch last year. Then I think the weather turned cold and too much rain and it stunted the growth. I only got about a dozen tomatoes from him. I saved some of the seeds anyway and am going to try again this year!! I also saved seeds from the peppers I bought at the farmer market and I want to pot everything! Our soil is too sandy with rocks and I have a rabbit living in my backyard who would eat all my veggies if I plant back there.

I am wanting to make some of those "topsy turvy" planters. I have 4 buckets w/lids I am going to use. I hope to plant a cherry tomato , cucumber, bannana pepper and a reg. tomato in them. I would also like to plant stawberries in these hanging bags I have. We do have a very small in ground garden about 8 x 13. I also plant all along my chain link fence - peas, beans , squash. One year we even planted pumpkins along the fence. We have been here 12 yrs and we started out very small. With just a couple of tomatoes and a small strawberry patch....We have alot of slugs here and moles, so I hope the "hanging" garden helps.

Square foot gardening techniques might work well for containers. See if your library has the book for more detailed info, or search youtube for videos about it. There's a plan for a 4x4 patio garden if you have a limited space. Hey, 4x4 is still a container!

Thanks for the link, I too want to try container gardening this year. My husband wants a real garden, which would be nice, but we have so many animals around here I don't think a garden would last long. Plus my parents and brother already have huge gardens, so I'm afraid of having too much produce!!

sight- if you use peat moss make sure you keep it WELL-WATERED....it tends to dry out VERY FAST......

    Thanks for posting that link.

I have grown tomatoes in containers with fair results. I am hoping to do better this year. The best results I've had are with green peppers.

this is what i do, the wood (standard 2x8 pine) is about 5 bucks for 8 feet, so 10 for the box and about 10 or so for the soil (it's above ground and works great for rocky soils). get the book from the library. mel bartholomew (sp) wrote it.

i can tell you that 2 planters per person is more than enough.

Just found this site today. All I have to say is:

Have been discussing with some of the ladies @ church re: gardening. Realizing you have to prepare soil at least a season in advance, thought I might be in a position where I couldn't garden this year...then I came across this post. :cheer:

I can't wait to get started - and according to a gardening friend, now is the time for the very things I want to plant in containers. Perfect timing!

Thanks so much for the link.
