I guess that answers that question
I had a look at the garden today and my garlic, planted last spring, is already 6" high! I forgot about it last year, and when I went to check it, it had already died back so I thought I'd killed it. LOL! I guess I don't have to worry about planting too late this year.

When the flower stalk starts to come up in the middle, cut it off. Not certain if you've grown garlic before or not, but the flower needs to go or it will pull energy from the blub.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I have _planted_ garlic before, but not had any luck with it. I don't remember any flower stalks last year. Last year it came up, started to turn brown in mid-summer, then I got distracted by other things and when I thought about it again there was no sign of the garlic at all so I thought it had just died. Last year was horrible, it rained so much in the spring that nothing did well.

Have never grown garlic? What do you start with?

To grow garlic you just plant the clove. Each clove makes one head of garlic. Here we plant in the fall and harvest in the summer. I don't know how to grow it in Hawaii. I would imagine that you would follow the procedures that you do whenever you plant bulbs. Now if I could just grow bananas and pineapple here I would be in heaven. Whenever I was hiking in Hawaii (Big Island) I came upon an abandoned banana plantation (?) I had no idea that the grew in such large bunches. Also I didn't know that pineapple were grown on the ground. I have led a very sheltered life. LOL
