Default pond liner as "mulch" for container garden?

    Hi all!

I wanted to see what other gardeners thought of this idea. DH had to replace the pond liner in the main part of our pond over the weekend. I picked up a 13x20 liner at Home Depot for $100. There is some left over after trimming. I was thinking that I could cut circles out of the plastic that would cover the tops of my pots. I would then cut a hole in the center big enough for the plant. It gets so hot here in the summer and this should keep the soil more moist. What do you guys think? Any other suggestions for the leftovers if this is a bad idea?

we used our leftover to cover the a/c condenser unit in the winter....

I've used black plastic around plants before to help keep down weeds and to retain moisture. The only real issue with using it is that it does hold heat in the soil. I've found it works best if I have mulch or something else on top of it or it can cook delicate plants when it's really hot.

I think it would hold the heat in and not allow water to "soak" in well. I think I would use a more natural mulch like bark or straw or moss to help keep moisture in and keep it cool.

I think it would work well as a weed blocker under decorative rocks in some other part of the yard where you don't have any plants. I know the kiddie pool I had set up one year killed off a big circle of grass and everything else underneath of it. You could poke some tiny holes in it for drainage if you had to.
