Compost Crock
Is there anything special about compost crocks? Some of them say they are somehow odor free. Is that a big deal? Couldn't I just make my own out of a large yogurt container or something?

I've never had a compost crock. I just use an old plastic container with a lid. I keep it in the fridge so that it doesn't smell if I wait a few days to feed it to the worms.

i believe the crock has some air holes and a charcoal filter in the lid. I just use a big cottage cheese container and keep the lid on.

I just use a big plastic container with a lid on it too. I have it sitting right next to the sink and once a week I bring it out.

It's good to hear other people are doing the same thing. I'm picking up bins to start my compost pile tonight...I'm excited to get going!

I use a large (maybe 4 gallon) recycled chlorine tablet bucket. it has a handle & a tight fitting lid. Once in a while it might start smelling, but i empty it so often it doesn't usually have a chance to get too stinky.
Also, with the tight fitting there is only odor when opened.
I have at times put a few layers of newspaper over the contents to keep the smell a t bay. I cook a lot of fresh veggies so all peelings & any plate scrapings as well as egg shells & coffee grounds go in there. It can fill up pretty quickly.
Those smaller ceramic crocks are way too small for my use & I am too cheap to have a fancy compost pot! they do look nice though!

I used to use a large yogurt container with a lid and it worked fine. Now however, I just put my scraps in a small bowl and take them out to the compost barrel a couple of times a day. The bowl goes in the dishwasher at bed time. No smell and very clean.

I use a plastic coffee container and keep the lid on. If the container starts to smell I wash it. No big deal!

i use an old bowl dumped daily.
11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I am using a tin that contained popcorn over the holidays. Was a gift. When it gets too yucky to use, I will switch to a coffee can. I also looked at the crocks but just can't justify the cost

I use a stainless steel compost container from Lee Valley. I used to use a plastic ice cream bucket but the plastic holds smells and the lid wasn't easy to take off with one hand.

I use a small, recycled, plastic bucket with a tight-fitting lid. I line the inside with a used brown paper lunch bag. I have found the bag and the scraps are the perfect combination of wet and dry material for my Tumbler Composter.

Ditto with the plastic container under the sink. If it has odors after being dumped, a little bleach and water does the trick. If it's not too big, just rinse it and put it in the dishwasher. It will get bleached then.

My plastic coffee can does hold smells sometimes. I put a tablespoon of bleach and fill it with water. No more smells for me! Or my nose doesn't work very well.
