Default A question about container gardening

Okay, I don't have a garden. Shoot I only have shrubs and river rock in my flowerbeds because I don't like to work in the yard!

My backyard is sloped, really sloped and I have big dogs that pee on everything in site!

    Okay that being said.....

If I wanted to maybe grow a few tomatoes in containers in my FRONT yard maybe just stick them in my flowerless beds so they will get sun and have access to water will the squirrels eat them??

We have a MILLION of them and I don't want to invest time and money in a lost cause and will have no doggies in front to keep them away.

    So yea or nay???

I eat tomatoes on my sandwiches and hamburgers when we camp and they are costing me quite a bit for a nice firm red tomato.

I don't think squirrels will harm tomatoes. The only animal I have seen damage our tomatoes is deer. They will eat the vines. I would certainly try to grow some tomatoes in the area you mentioned. As long as they have plenty of water, sunshine and some fertilizer, they should do fine.

I would go for the tomatoes in containers. I would love to try those topsy turvy containers. You can grow so much in hanging baskets and containers. You could even grow some green onions and lettuce and cucumbers and do an entire salad container garden.

I was just going to suggest the Topsy Turvey containers on a hook for you! Not much dirt involved and they are off the ground so no worries about squirrels. (if you hang these on one of these planter hooks, spray the lower part of the hook with WD 40/vaseline/lard - something slippery to keep the squirrels from climbing up the hook.

https://www.hangingtomato.com/?cid=486259 - looks like they are offering buy one, get one free right now.

My dad gave us one of these to try. He had them last year and loved them, his tomatoes came earlier than our ground tomatoes, and he had tons of them! I think you can get other veggies as well.

I have decided to give a few a try. It won't cost me that much and if I stink at least I would know I tried right?? LOL!

I am planning on getting clay pots since it is the very front of my home as well as some nice bagged dirt.

Remember, clay pots will dry out faster than plastic so you'll need to water more frequently. Have fun!

I would use plastic but I worry about the plastic leeching into my plants. It freaks me out a little....
