Planting Onions
Onions
http://www.durgan.org/URL/?Onions 10 April 2009 Planting Onions.
About 200 onion bulbs were planted. They were locally purchased and are classified as Spanish, White, Cooking and Shallots (green bunching). They bulbs were planted to a depth just up to the shoulder, about a third out of the ground in relatively firm ground, and the spacing is 6 inches between centers. Soil temperature is about 6 degrees C.Durgan

Wow, I thought I loved onions but ... I'm outclassed here.
I grow mine from seed ... this year I've got Copra Hybrid, Greek Salad Onions, and one other variety whose name escapes me at the moment.

I tried onions one year and they did not do well. I don't think I have the right soil for them. The ones that got large enough to eat were extremely strong tasting.

I planted onion sets - Texas 1015 and a red variety. They're starting to "get a shape". I did have to cut some flower buds out. Also some Vidalia seeds and leek seeds, which are up and growing well. I don't know how long they'll take to grow - hope they make before the season ends.

For some reason here in South Central WI - Zone 5 - I get better harvests growing onions from seed (winter-sown) than I ever do from onion sets. From seed I get big, perfect, flavorful bulbs every time.

Interesting. I've always started onions from sets..but they never seem to take off.
We have a LOT of clay in our garden...and have steadily tried to get more topsoil for it. I'm sure that's why....onions and potatoes need soft planting ground to 'expand'.

We grow from seed too, ours are almost ready for transplanting, I think we've got close to 400 this year, but honestly we very well might have more, I just don't remember

Never thought about growing leeks. I know that I would use them if I grew them - they are soooo expensive in the stores that I buy them only as a treat - shall look into the possibility. Mahalo for the idea!!
