    Default Planting Carrots

    http://www.durgan.org/URL/?Carrots 10 April 2008 Planting Carrots
Carrots were planted type is Hybrid Carrot Eagle 92A from Stokes. (Belicum X Nantes Hybrid). The small seeds are spread carefully on top of a row of toilet paper, then lightly covered with fine soil. The method is utilized to improve uniformity of seed spacing, insuring a uniform depth, and possibly better germination all things considered. Carrots germinate at rather cool temperatures about 17 C is ideal. If the temperature is too high carrots will not germinate or germination is slow.

I have never had good luck with root crops. They grow nice tops but just a skinny root, nothing edible. I must be missing something from my soil? Any advice would be appreciated.

Nice idea with the row of toilet paper, Durgan.
    I think I'll give that a try.
With the carrot seed I mix radish seed
& broadcast thinly. the quick growing radish seed mark the row &
pulling them is an easy way to thin the carrots.

I love carrots but will have to settle on buying them from the store.

I should have mine in the ground by now, but it's going to have to wait a bit yet since my tiller still isn't here.

I don't bother with even spacing, just thin them as required after they come up.

MIL grows hers and she lives in Sherwood Park, Alberta (which is the east suburb of Edmonton). Her carrots are honestly the most delicious ones I've ever had. I'd love to do carrots here but with the rabbits running around and the skunks, I'm afraid they'd get nibbled out.

I make planting of carrots pretty much the whole growing season. I plant mine with my tomatoes. They help keep them cooler by their shade. I have no problems growing carrot. I make a small depth trench, drop the seeds in and lightly cover with loose soil. Keep moist. Then I thin them to about a 1/2- 1 inch apart. The ones I pull are given to the rabbit. Also the tops when I harvest. I wait 2-3 weeks between plantings so I have a continuous crop later in the season. I always add good organic manure ( rabbit here) to all my garden beds all winter long and then mix it in , in the spring when I can turn the soil. Like any veggie, they need to be fed.

You can also grow carrots in a big pot on the deck or porch. You don't need a huge pot. Just one 12 in deep. You don't want bigger carrots, they could be tough. Sow the seeds, cover with loose potting soil, keep moist, thin. Then let then grow.

I like the TP idea as well. We also mix the carrot seed with the radish seed and we mix it with sand as well. The sand helps with the spacing as well.

Good germination of carrots in 18 days. Generally the weather has been cool with adequate moisture. the full row appears to have germinated.
