http://www.durgan.org/URL/?Pontiac 12 April 2009 Planting Red Pontiac Potatoes. Twenty two potatoes were planted. The ground temperature is about 7 degrees C, but the potatoes are well covered so should thrive.
Yummy. Do you cure them for a day and put starter or do you just stick them in the ground. We don't have many bugs here yet. Doesn't look like there's much backyard left. That's what I would like to do. I know the neighbors would luv that.
Durgan, I like the way your garden is planted right in a row, left to right and not all over. I am planning on planting peas in one spot/potatoes accross the garden and everything acording to height, not planting time.
Also, what are you going to hill your potatoes with. I usually mound soil on either side and hill the plants as they emerge, but I don't see any soil reserved for that in your beautiful garden.
The potatoes are two feet apart so there is some soil for hilling. I also put some good compost in the hollows when hilling, if necessary. About five inches of hilling soil is sufficient- enough to prevent light from striking the new tubers.
This is the first year I marked the seed potatoes, since when digging commences the vegetation has disappeared, and it is difficult to determine the center of the cluster of potatoes. Marking limits spearing the tubers with the digging fork.
http://www.durgan.org/URL/?Potatoes 13 April 2009 Potatoes planted. Today about 60 more potatoes were planted. Row width is two feet and spacing in the row is 12 inches. Depth is about four inches. Types are Superior (white), Russian Blue, Unknown from 2008 stock, Four store bought to complete a row. Total in the patch is about 80 potatoes. Red Pontiac were planterd on 12 April 2009.
