I just planted green onions, and put my pea starts in today!
Also put the seeds in for zuchini and yellow crookneck, and little lemon cucumbers, but they won't be up for weeks.

I plan to plant potatoes, lettuce and onions tomorrow. Unfortunately, the idea for the thread can to me on a rainy day. Our last frost free day is May 10 so that is when planting will start in earnest.

It's been raining here about every other day and is way too wet to even get in our garden.
I don't think it will ever dry out so we can plant.

Hey Fixer...I think I will just follow your gardening schedule. Keep posting what you are planting!!!! Since we don't live too far away, I think my crops will be fine if I copy you.

Just found this thread!

Right now, I have just a few new veggie plants outside: eggplant (Japanese style), one melon (Ambrosia cantaloupe), and one bush bean. I have several plants from last year: two bell peppers, one wax pepper, one Thai Dragon chili, two artichokes, four garlic plants, a rhubarb, horseradish, asparagus, and a bunch of berry plants and herbs. I also have one volunteer tomato plant growing in my lavender planting box, and since it popped up in Feb, I don't have the heart to pull it.
I am sure I forgot a few, as I'm going from memory. Hope to plant an Asian pear tree today that I got last Sunday.DH aka Mad Hen

I haven't thought about tomato paste - that WOULD be tasty!
I typically dry them and use them in stir-fries or in any dishes that call for hot chilies. They are around 100,000 on the Scoville scale, so they have some heat!!
I don't know if they are heirloom or not. If they are, I'd be happy to send you some seeds this fall for spring planting. I brought mine inside last year and it is growing on my window sill, waiting to be re-planted outside.
(The pic is not of my plant, just a representative photo. Mine doesn't have peppers yet.)Last edited by madhen; 04-16-2009 at 09:35 AM.

I live in Northern Ohio..and the only thing growing here...(besides my daffodils that are coming up)~is my indoor chia-pet herb garden. This was a christmas gift from the kids...and I have cilantro, dill, basil and sweet Marjoram growing. I think it needs transplanted..because they are starting to choke out.~my youngest loves cilantro...and has been pulling the tiny leaves and using them like tic-tacs~!
I would LOVE some fresh asparagus. I've been buying it, and roasting it in olive oil and garlic~HEAVENLY~!

I did my planting for spring in mid-March and my vegetable garden crammed full with shallots, onions, potatoes, carrots, bush beans, roma tomatoes, lima beans, sweet peppers, hot peppers, corn and cucumbers. I have been harvesting sparsely the onions to use as green onions but I am trying to let the majority of them continue to grow. The rest of the veggies are in the state of being green and growing but not producing/harvesting just yet. By the time we harvest most of these veggies it will be time to plant new things for the summer garden.
The flower and herb garden is growing better than I ever thought it would be. I've never been able to grow herbs before (I've tried twice in containers) and I have never ever been able to keep flowering plants alive to save my life, so I'm quite shocked and inspired to learn more about them and hopefully continue into this new area. I've been picking a little bit of the herbs here and there, but I'm trying to keep myself from doing that until they are more grown. I was actually quite surprised at how fast some of them have grown. I can't wait until summer and see how full and blooming everything really gets. - 80% of my flowers and herbs I planted in the garden as seeds in mid-March.
I'm very lucky and feel blessed because where we live I am able to have 3 growing seasons (spring, summer/fall, and early winter). I am almost able to keep my garden completely full year round. Late January and February are the only months that I am unable to grow much other than just a few things.
I agree with you Fixer it's very interesting to see how different our planting schedules are depending on where we all live. I am amazed that a few people I know that live up north are able to grow so much in such a short growing season when sometimes I feel like I can't grow enough in a long one. And also how the climates where we all live make a big difference in what we can grow and when also. It's all very interesting.

I wish I could plant something today. There's a forecast of snow on the 23rd and then a rain/snow mix the week after that. My tomato plants are on the way to the house and I'd hate for them to go to waste because the weather doesn't want to cooperate.

I have in the ground onions, lettuce, radishes. Yesterday I "made" my strawberry patch. So today the strawberries will go in and I was thinking of peas too. Are last frost date is May15th, but there are many years I push it way too much! In fact the greenhouses here are having open houses this weekend. I can hardly wait. Not if I can get off the internet, I'll go outside and "play".

I've only been winter sowing, but I've got about 110 different things planted in containers outside. I didn't have time to plant any seeds today, but yesterday I planted asters.
This weekend I will travel to my hometown, to my oldest sister's home (on 10 acres, once part of the farm where I grew up), to plant the cold crops - spinach, lettuce, radishes, turnips, onions, kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, rutabaga, Swiss Chard, and to try again to plant raspberries in a small patch (I have 6 canes). Last year they croaked.
