Default I'm starting to resent living in the city

    I miss my privacy.

8 years ago we moved from the acreage. Now the acreage wasn't ideal. The house was cold and drafty, lot sof mice we couldn't seal out. There was nothing for the kids that we could find.

Now the kids are older, and very involved in sports, it would be hard to move away from the city. But I wish I could have a little urban homestead. But I can't have chickens here. I could maybe get away with rabbits, but I think the kids would freak to eat them..lol.

I want to do edible landscaping, but that takes more money than I'm willing to spend to create it.

I'd love to be on an acreage, buy a calf once a year to raise and butcher, chickens to raise in the spring. A lush garden to grow in. Fruit trees and berries. All we'd be missing is milk and grains/flour.

Perhaps as the kids get older and move away we can get back to the country...

Dont get bummed, find a fried who DOES have acreage. Or join a coop. You get to "work the land" get fresh food but you dont have to pay for the large lot.

I dont have ANY sun in my yard. I do some potted veggis, but I work my neighbors garden and love that just as much.

This is why we like camping so much. We have a lot to go to 4-5 months a year. I'm going to start a garden out there. His soil is SO rich. Dh will build me a raised bed or 2 to work in. I was concerned about watering, but I'm going to set up soaker hoses and to the watering on a timer. Minimal water wasted. We should get some things. We want some trees on our lot, and I'm thinking fruit trees. This is our 3rd year there. The management has no issues with us doing gardens etc out there, as it's using the land in a friendly fashion. And even if we leave, the next renters will enjoy the "fruits". Maybe next year I'll take the summer off and live out there the whole time.

But I'd still love to be in the country again. BTW... the acreage was less expensive than the house in the city... ironic.

Yeah DH and I have massive plans to move to a larger plot of land with a size-appropriate house on it. That way, he can have his house to be a homebody in and I can have land for a garden.

I'm trying to find out how much of a plot of land we're going to really want and how accessible to the city we'll still be for a variety of things. I love the city but I have no room for a backyard + garden. Our backyard has four trees in it and the front has one huge pine tree plus a spot to put tomatoes.

You have my sympathy. Most people have no idea of what you are talking about. People would be lost without Walmart next door.

Maybe do some camping, this might get you outta your "blues". Otherwise when the kids are older you can always move back to the country.

I just moved to the country when I married DH and now I would never live in a town or city again! I love the freedom to do whatever we want on so much land. I sympathize. Hopefully you can move back when the children are gone.

I grew up on a working farm so I know how you feel. My children will never understand.

You know... dh has mentioned country living recently. I think he misses it too, but we have the kids well anchored in their activities, which for 2 so far gives them potential for huge scholarships as they excel in their areas. So to move would be to take away opportunity. But maybe.. if the right opportunity to move came.... Even if it were just on the outskirts... Even a couple acre lot to work on.

In the mean time, dh is working in the yard, and noticed teh one neighbor is building a greenhouse... maybe I can convince him to build me one?
