Planting Radish Seed
Radish
http://www.durgan.org/URL/?Radish 16 April 2009 Planting Radish Seed
The "Valentine" radish seed from Stokes Seeds was planted today. The seed was carefully spaced on toilet paper to maintain depth and to insure proper spacing, thus eliminating thinning after sprouting. Some wood ash was applied to the row in an attempt to inhibit damage by flea beetles. It may not work but at least I tried.Durgan

I always make a mess of my radishes so I bought seeds that were on a bio-degradable tape this year and we'll see how it goes

I winter-sowed my radishes so the seedlings were hardy little buggers that didn't show the slightest trace of transplant shock the day after. I might lose a few, but I planted well over 100 so I doubt the losses will have much impact on our radish enjoyment.

I always just let them come up as they will. The thinnings (and young leaves) are good in salads.

This is true ... the sprouts are yummy and nutritious as well.
I just hate thinning in general. I want every seed to have a chance!

Germinated in nine days, a few of the days were relatively cool around 5 C. No sign of leaf damage due to flea beetles.Durgan

My radishes this year were all very small. Any ideas why? I have a "Square foot garden", with the recommended soil mixture, no weeds or bugs.
