Oh how I would love a bigger homestead...
with chickens. I think I'm doing pretty good dispite my backyard is a 12x12 patch of grass. I'm doing a U-shaped garden around the edges and some container gardening that I can put on my concrete patio so there is still grass for my 3yr old to play in. This year I'm planting the basic tomato, pepper, pole beans and cucumber, then I've added spinach, swiss chard, zucchini, brocoli and some strawberry pants that don't seem to be doing very well. I'll tell you the advantage to growing my own organic garden is my 3yr had developed a love of veggies. She'll go and pull off a cucumber and just naw on it as she's playing out back. Put any vegetable in front of her and she'll eat it. I asked DH to get me a canning system for my birthday this summer so I can take advantage of the tons of tomatoes I usually get.
So here's a small question for a small backyard, what kind of herbs grow well in pots? What kind of veggies grow well in pots? I got some big pots free (SCORE!) so I'm excited to fill them.

I've grown tomatoes, green onions, lettuce, chives, and peas in pots, with great success. I didn't have much luck with squashes or corn.
If you have big pots, most herbs do well in containers. I have about a half dozen growing in pots on my windowsill, and I believe they are all a year old or more.DH aka Mad Hen

This year I"m trying potatoes, cucumber, pepper and green onion just to see how they do. My chives, sage and dill are in pots. We also tried potatoes in a black trash sack, they are peaking through the dirt already!
