Anyone heard of guerilla gardening?
I just read a book on it. It is when people garden in public places or private property that is not theirs, but is neglected. They garden and make it beautiful, even sometimes planting vegetables and harvesting them. It was very interesting.

We have practiced a form of guerilla gardening for years. We've captured and imprisioned many plants this way. Cuttings and pups brought home is a cheap and great way to garden. Lots of our stuff comes from construction sites where renovation is taking place and plants are going to be mowed over. Got 5 fully gron crepe myrtle trees this way. Front end loader scraped them out of the ground and dumped them right into the bed of the pickup. Took a come along to get them out of the truck when we got them home. But ohhh the shade and the flowers we have been rewarded with.

Many people around here garden in their backyards, but want more room...they use the alley. Sometimes it looks really cool. Waste management is always careful not to damage stuff that people plant in the alley.
I read a book on it a long time ago. It was an interesting read. I wish I could think of the name of that book.

On Oahu, there are some neighborhood gardens in the middle of Waikiki if you know where to look!!
On Maui, there seem to be a lot of gardens over the fences that mark the division of back yards and thesides of the roadways. On the way out of school yard, there are these same sort of gardens on school property - noone ever bothers them. Very industrious gardeners.
In Connectict 35 years ago, our company sponsored community garden plots and a friend and I had one. A lot of work and very rewarding.Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

I have a copy of Food, Not Lawns and I love it. Great ideas.
NPR had a story on a few weeks ago about people in New York making "seed bombs" - a combination of seeds and compost in a ball. They can throw them all over the place and after a couple of rain storms, the seeds take root and grow beautiful, healthy native plant life in abandon or unused lots all over the city.

The book I read talked about the seed bombs too, so interesting!
