What have you used for slugs?
Was wondering what other people have tried for slug control?
Have read about the 'beer in a lid thing'.....where they fall in and drown.
Most recently have read that using an old sand paper disc, cutting it to center, then placing around the plant and the slug won't go over the rough sandpaper.
I usually just grab the bug-getta stuff at HD but would like to try other things.
What do you use that works? Does it kill them or just deter them?

I haven't had to deal with slugs but from what I hear, if you water your plants in the early morning it helps to keep them from showing up in your garden.

salt kills slugs
Just pour some on them and the dry up and die.
When we use to get some on our concrete at night. I would head out before bed and salt them eventually they stopped coming around.

I have a container with salt that I put them in to die when I am picking them off plants, but I can't use the salt in my flower garden.

I've only used the beer in the lid trick and I never have them come back.

Try using grape juice instead of beer, its suppose to be alot cheaper.

I found this link while looking for organic pesticide
it has some slug remedies

like soap water
I remember my mom saving bath water to put on her plants. She said the plants liked it I wonder if it was because the bugs didn't.

Thanks imagine...will keep the website, some good recipes. I DO draw the line at the one that called for 1/2 cup of slugs.....
...if I could catch that many at one time I probably wouldn't have the problem in the first place.
would also like to know how they 'corralled' 1/2 cup of them to make it...UGH!
Someone told me a few years back that: slugs don't need a partner to lay fertile eggs........AND......they can travel up to 2 miles a night! If this is true not sure this is a war I will ever win!!!

I know how they corralled them. Dry dog food in a metal bowl on a damp concrete screened poach. They must have loved then stuff as the dog bowl had slug slime on it each morning. I could have easily collected more than 1/2 cup of slug each night before I started to salt them each night.
At our new place we see slugs so rarely when we do the kids like to stop and watch them.Last edited by imagine; 06-09-2009 at 04:54 PM.

I put several tablespoons of cheap soy sauce in shallow container then cover it with an inch of vegetable oil. Slugs, snails and earwigs crawl in and cannot get out. I strain it several times a week to get rid of the catch and set it back out again to catch more. I also sometimes hire my 11 year old neighbor to search and destroy and pay him by the snail (expensive but effective in early spring when there are way too many snails).

crushed egg shells. They cut themselves as they crawl across the shells. Works great, but you need a lot of shells for a big garden. SIGH!
