    Default Radish Question/Farmers Market

    Good Morning Frugalites!

Dh and I decided (alittle late this year) that we were going to try our hand at a garden for the first time. We are still living here with FIL because, well, the economy sucks and we cant seem to find a job, even at McDonalds. So it goes. So we've been throwing our time into outside stuff.

A wonderful lady whose house I clean bi-weekly is a huge gardener. She's given me herbs and various other things to try to grow. She sets up a stand at our little tiny country farmers market which just started last weekend. She was going to have me work it for her this weekend, as she was to be away, but now she will be here, however she said she would sell my radishes for me at her stand.

(Radishes are the only things that are done, my lettuce didnt make it and nothing else is ready). I have one row of radishes. I have never grown them nor bought them at the store before.

Questions: Once I pull them today, to sell in the morning, I wash them...then what?

Do I leave on the greens and root? How many do I put in a bunch? Do I keep them in the fridge tonight? What do I charge? I dont even know what they cost at the store and after about 45 minutes of googling I cannot find out anywhere.

We grew these radishes with no pesticides. Dh says they are good (he ate some, I am not eating them.).

I am going to place squash and zuccini in their place once tilled. Thank you all for any responses, I know you guys are the pro's at gardening!

Clean them, leave the leaves and root on. I would bunch them 6-8 together depending on size. Or ask your market friend what others usually do. No idea what prices are like, you might swing by the grocery store and see, then go a bit higher since they are organic and you can do that.

I would keep them in the fridge in a bag, or they will wilt.

Here's a link to an online store and their radish bunches.
    https://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/s...ProductDisplay

You leave the leaves on (when full sized they're stringy, but they're edible and it keeps the roots happier. Wash off the dirt, and I'd probably pull them the day or evening before, wash off the dirt, bundle them up (rubber bands is what I think folks usually use) and keep them overnight in the fridge with damp papertowels around them to keep them fresh.

I've never sold mine, but I wrap mine in the fridge with damp paper toweling sometimes if I'm not going to use them right away. Someone who sells them might know better than I how to do this!

The Wegman's bunches were 3 oz each.

btw, here's a link to a radish greens soup:

I can't help much with the Farmer's Market question, but here I paid .99 cents for a small bag of them at the grocery store?
Maybe that will give you a good starting point?

Also depending on the sizes of the radishes themselves would determine how many I would bunch together.
You might want to weigh them out, instead of counting them out?
    Just something else to consider.

I do know that the 'special' varieties usually cost more money & around here I can't find them~white icicles, etc.

    I love radishes!!

I would wait as late as I could before pulling them. Wash them and leave the tops and roots on. Be careful about using the term organic. It means more than not spraying and there may be certification requirements in your area.

Some good ideas. I won't be much help with the fm detail. I just go to buy, have never sold stuff.

Here is a good link that might help you with the store prices though....not sure of the stores in your area or if they are listed but it does give a lot of them. I use this site a LOT for 'pre-shopping' before a purchase......
www.sundaysaver.com .....it is like getting the Sunday ads on screen.

As for the radishes......in our area the stores will often have them at 50 cents a bunch (used to be 3 for a buck!!) (along with green onions).

As for buying...... I like radishes but am picky!! If I go to buy a bunch and it has very many (over 2!) huge ones in it I won't get it.......they have a chance of being pithy. Might want to watch the sizes when bundling.

Good luck at your sale.....let us know how it went.

I just planted bush beans (green beans) last week and they have sprouted. The package said you can plant more every three weeks for a continuous crop up until August. This will insure a steady supply of product to sell at the market.
Having a recipe printed out and available is a great idea. Like the radish top soup.
