Pictures of growth to date. The weather has been cool, so growth is not outstanding. Flea beetles have been the cause of minor damage to some plants, and the Colorado Potato Beetle made its appearance, but insect damage has been minimal.
The broccoli bolted due to a few days of hot weather after the cold spell. Garlic, onions, and carrots are exceptional. Tomato growth is almost at the disaster stage. The various bush berries and fruit trees are all doing well.Durgan

Wow Durgan....that represents lots of work.....very nice.
Was that a gooseberry plant I saw? How easy are they to 'start'? My cousin is supposed to be saving me a start of one. I will be getting it in the fall. Lots of people in this area have never even heard of gooseberries!!

I love your vegetable garden! It looks like the one my parents used to have at our old house. I used to spend hours helping out (read:eating everything).

Starting gooseberry plants is easy. Last July I started one. I cut off a healthy branch and put the piece in a gallon pot. The pot was buried in the ground in a convenient place and kept damp. I let the plant overwinter and removed in May, when some growth commenced. The lady picked up the plant about May 1, and removed from the pot and planted it in her garden. I saw it on 14 June 2009, and it was thriving.

Your garden looks great. I would love to have the room for a larger garden. Do you start plants indoors and which ones? I always get my cold weather crops out too late.
Thanks,
Pam

I start indoors tomatoes, cucumbers, ground cherries. This is to get the products earlier in the season. Some plants are purchased from a garden supply, particularly the cool season ones, like cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, romaine lettuce. I plant these almost with snow on the ground, gambling on the weather. Sometimes I win and sometimes lose. I plant seed directly as much as possible, but with our short season some plants cannot be grown using this method.
