Default Stores are putting away seeds until next spring.

I went this morning to Lowe's and Home Depot and they have put away their seed displays. Home Depot said they won't have any more until spring. We are in Zone 8 and there is still alot of growing season left. I don't understand why they would put away the displays so early. I know they had quite a few seeds left a week ago. So stock up if you will need anything before spring.

I'm going to have to check out Superstore to see if they're doing the same thing. I'm heading that way this weekend anyways, so I hope they haven't put them all away yet. I know that they have them on sale towards the end of the summer and I've yet to see that. I'd be sad if I couldn't get tomato seeds until the spring.

it's stoopid becuase our growing season starts in october.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

Your local nurseries should still be carrying seeds. I know I'm going to see about getting some beets this weekend, for a fall crop.

I check at the farm supply stores in town and purchase seeds about this time of the year when they have them 50%-75% off and use them in the spring. I always have enough for the fall crops I'm just getting ready to plant -lettuce, spinach, radish.

I sell veggie plants, in the spring, so I buy my seed now and have it shipped in, gotta get those onions plants out early. Don't often buy in the store. Unless I see a variety I don't see very often and want to save seed from a non hybrid.

Don't have a greenhouse, just have a permant setup, in the laundry room, use fluorescent bulbs, one cool white, and one warm white, start my onions in Febuary first. But yeah while I'm ording check and see what I need for fall.

I'll check with the farm store and plant nursery and see what they have.

I have a flourescent light over my washer/dryer too. This was the first year I started plants from seed. My seed germinated and grew very well. I was pleased with them. I planted some Bradley tomato seed that I had kept in the refrig. for years and every one of them germinated. I used a Jiffy greenhouse flat but I had the worst time trying to get my seedlings out. I will use cups next year.

KatieInLa2, I just put 3 or four seed in each cell, then when they get past the 2 leaf stage, just take a screw driver and transplant them into 4 or 6 cell, sections, there ar 12 sections to each flat. I use two flats, one without holes and one with. Generally don't buy the ones with holes, I get plenty of leakers to drill my own holes instead of throwing them away.

One thing I find necessary is a fan going all day long. Also it's my own idea but I put a bit of dishsoap when I water, and I only water from the bottom. They are so easy to raise, I have to have plenty for my own garden, so mostly I just raise the varieties , that I plant.

Question for anyone, I sell a whole lot of the sweet banana pepper plants, and the peppers also, and never see them in the stores. Why are they so popular on my table, but anywhere else I don't see them, I suppose at some point I must had several customers asking for them.

People know about them, because I had to rescue the few plants I had left so I could plant some in my garden. Never eaten one though, and not particularly a pepper fan.

As a last resort you could always get them on-line. I am getting daily emails for free shipping from some sites.

Good luck in your search........I envy your longer growing season.

I found this out last month when I went to wallyworld to pick up seeds. That's OK - I had trouble with the stoopid lettuce and onion seeds I bought there, I going to buy them from now on at my local hardware store that carries them year 'round.

I usually buy my garden seed from the Dollar Store or from Home Hardware, sometimes go to the city to the seed stores too for some specialty seeds.

In the spring I buy lots of packets of seed for the varieties which I know I'll be seeding more than once. Also, I like to seed my planters with dill, tomato & lettuce last thing in autumn just before snowfall. I cover them lightly with about 1/2 inch of soil, and in the spring they germinate outside in those patio planters as soon as the snow is gone and the weather warms up a bit. I always have some early lettuce & dill this way, and I've noticed that those tomato plants are very sturdy and hardy when they sprout and grow outdoors.

One thing I'm a bit concerned about is the seed shortages that have been happening from time to time. Sometimes I've been unable to buy zuccini because the previous year's seed-crop was compromised. Other varieties too have at times been scarcer than they used to be. I think we'll be seeing more of the vintage seed varieties in future, because they breed true, and the hybrids are chancy at times.

I just found seeds today at Target - they had a full rack out. Question - I'm in Zone 5 - are beets cold weather veggies. I thought that they were, but then I was looking at the packet and it said plant after all danger of frost is past.

    I'm in Zone 2 or 3.
I've planted beets early, and they don't sprout till they've been watered many times, enough to dissolve the hormones on their seed coats. I've also seen them freeze in a spring frost.
I'm not sure how long your growing season is, but one can always try. If they don't get very big, so what, that just means you'll be harvesting young, tender beets.
    Good Luck!
