Default A look at raspberry season

The raspberries are winding down. It has been a good season. The Caroline variety has done well. The fruit was a good quality and abundant. The Jacklyn variety produced little. It acts as if it is a year behind in development. They are both in their third year. Jacklyn was recommended by some I trust so they will be given a chance. Their friut seems to be a good size and stays on the cane when ripe. Caroline, however, will drop friut. When picking, the ripest friut will drop off at the slightest movement. There is fifteen canes of each. As you can see, they require no trellising. I think raspberries would work well in a suburban garden. They require little space and minimal care. I will cut these back to ground level this fall. Then, in the spring, I will thin and fertilize them. That is the sum total of the time spent, excluding picking.

I have a stand of wild raspberries behind my veggie garden. We mow the edges down but have always let the rest go. Thanks for the advice, I'll cut them to ground level this fall too. That will help make the yard that much neater!

    Thanks again --
