probably a stupid question....but...
the other day I was making up a batch of salsa to can. One of the ingredients I needed was a green pepper, which I did not have. I did however, have a green pepper in the garden that had been green for weeks but is a red pepper that still had not turned. I know that green peppers are basically unripened peppers and that's why some people have a hard time eating them. I picked it, washed it and used it in my salsa. but now I'm wondering if anyone will get sick for basically eating an underripe red pepper. I'm sure this is a stupid question so thanks to all for not laughing too loudly when you read this.
and, thanks for your responses!Wife to DH

No problem, they are fit to eat (and can) at any time on the ripeness timeline!! Enjoy (and if you have too much salsa.....)

You are correct that a green pepper is just an unripe red pepper. So you fed them a green pepper. I hope they enjoyed it - green peppers are yummy.

Hey QM........we are here to help you increase the learning curve....no problem. What a great place to ask them too...HUH?
I learned this year that peppers can really run the gamut for colors.......planted some white ones and they went from light green to white to orange to red.......go figure. It was a new pepper for me and great fun!

Was thinking about this a couple days ago. Want a small garden next year. I've had peppers before and know that if you leave a green one on long enough it turns red. So does this mean there really is only ONE pepper and all it amounts to is how long you leave it on the plant or windowsill? Red, yellow and orange here is $2.99 to $3.99 each, not a pound. Green is shooting toward 75 cents or more each. I love peppers but the colored ones best. I've never had one turn other than from green to red. So are they all the same? Really, really want to know.
Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

I think there are some bell peppers that are bred to be better red...but I have always picked mine green and only let a few turn red and it worked out fine. I think next year I'm going to order some seeds for both. Some green and some to turn red to see what the difference is.
I tried something new this year, I always freeze my peppers chopped to cook with but I dehydrated them instead. Can't wait to try them.
