    Default Lettuce Question

Ok gardeners, I planted lettuce for the first time and it is doing great. Now for the stupid question, how do you harvest it ??
Do you pick the leaves off, or do you pull up the whole head ??
I have Romaine & a really pretty dark green variety. Thanks for your help !!

If the lettuce is a head variety (tight ball of leaves) you take the whole thing. Otherwise you can pick leaves as they mature, but don't let them get too big because they get bitter.

Or, if it gets cold, like it does here, just take the whole head of leaf lettuce before frost kills it. (Not a problem in Texas)

I like to cut mine just above ground. You'll get a second growth that way.

we grew tons of red and leaf lettuce this past summer. i would go out and cut the leaves big enough but not let them get too big because they do get bitter. we got quite a bit. i think lettuce likes sun and warmth...am i right?
