Default clueless in the garden-square foot gardening.

I want to start a garden this Spring...have no idea what preparations i should be making this winter. i'm thinking about doing "square foot gardening" has anyone done this?

I'd be grateful for even the smallest hints of what to be working on.

    xoxo

There are a ton of web resources and books, check your library for some of them.

Right now you should be planning where you want to put it, think about what part of your yard gets sun and what gets shade. Also, you may want to order seed ASAP, as things can get backed up (or sold out) as early as March.

Figure out what gardening zone you are in, a quick google search will tell you. Find the local university agriculture extension web site, they will have helpful gardening advice for your locale.

Build that compost pile!!! I start cleaning my barn and wheelbarrowing it out to the garde lot until I get 6-8 inches of prime poo built up over the whole thing. Then I sit back and let it rot down while I drool over my seed catalogs!

did it and hated it.... for the most part.

Tomatoes.. they do not give you enough room. IMO, plant them how you normally would.
BUSH Green beans.. same as above. It makes harvesting difficult and I wound up damaging the plants.

It works well with things romaine lettuce, cabbages, broccoli plants that you know how large they will get and fit in the sq ft method.

I have the book and read it quite extensively and it makes a lot of sense, but in practice, it aggravated me.
