Default Seeds ordered -- I'm ready for spring!

I sent in my catalog order for seeds today. I was disappointed last year that many varieties I wanted were not available locally, and of course by May it is too late to mail order. I also heard too many horror stories of late shipments and out of stock seeds due to the incredibly high demand last spring. So this year I decided not to wait!

    I ordered:

    basil
    yellow beans
    golden beets
    ruby beets
    carrots
    chard
    cucumber
    butter lettuce
    mixed peppers
    radish
    yellow squash

Should give us a lot of variety next year. I will also buy tomatoes from a local nursery after the ones I seed from this year's saved seed fail to thrive. Now, if this snow will just melt off...

I'd love to order my seeds now but we're still in limbo as to whether we're moving in the summer or not. I know that we're doing a lot of outside work in the spring, plus the house we have our eye on is being renovated over the winter. I got to see the backyard of the house and it has raspberry bushes along the entire left side of the house (the longer side that the garage is attached to). There's a plot that looks like the mother of the seller planted stuff before, plus there are berry bushes in the backyard.

I'd love to grow some carrots, though. Carrots fresh from the garden are delicious.

I hope you have lots of fertile crops this year!

Know the feeling about the snow CH....but, with me, a sunshine dance won't help much for a few months. Sure seems long.

I have been on-line looking and 'drooling'.......trying to find a yellow leaved clematis that I saw last year......have to check to see if the price has come down.

I don't even DARE go out and see what made it and what didn't....not ready for the disappointment yet and the 'no snow' winter we have had is really hard on the plants!!

You are way ahead of me, Contrary Housewife! All I've done is drool over the Burpee seed catalog. Always seems like winter is so long, but then before you know it it's time to plant the garden already. I better get busy planning already!

Well, it looks like things have changed! I think we'll be joining you soon with ordering seeds. The move won't happen for another year, so I can plant my garden this year and reconfigure our yard to help compensate for it. This includes setting up both rain barrels in the backyard, then putting just flowers in the front with a smaller garden in the side yard.

I'd love to do carrots and a small strip of lettuce (we didn't eat all of the lettuce - we wasted more than we ate), plus some pole beans.

I'll know more when I figure out what to plant.

I'm holding off a bit, as well, because once those seeds arrive, I get the itch to plant them, and then I always start too early!

I can't wait to order but I haven't received any catalogs yet(ordered them the week before Christmas). I like holding the catalog and debating better than looking online

    Ordered mine!

    Tomato's
    Green Beans
    Summer Squash
    Winter Squash
    Pumpkins
    Peat Pellets for the starter

That's about all my garden can hold. I'm also going to get spring chickens this year. I check city laws and found I can have six. I plan on buying six and killing three in the fall for consumption and letting the other three produce eggs. The tomato's are going to get canned this year and I am going to try to maximize my yeilds as much as possible. I'm excited!

I live on the coast of SC.....and my hyacinths are starting to come up! Our cold spell should end next week.

Why do you order seeds rather than buy at the store? New to gardening...thanks for the help

I ordered to assure myself of specific varieties that I wanted. Last year I was unable to find certain types of vegetables locally and it really irritated me.

People also order to get heirloom varieties or certified organic seed. Most chain stores don't sell those, or don't sell a good selection of them.

I'm holding off on ordering my seeds until I can get the right measurements for this year's garden. I forgot what they were last year.
