I'm jealous, it is still too early here. But in a week or two I am going to start my tomato seedlings.

I'm eager to try container gardening this year.

I went to a community gardening event in my neighbourhood this morning and got eight small terra cotta pots for starting things. Also a bag of organic apples, all for free!

Am wondering if I am too late to strat things from seeds? I'm thinking peppers, vine tomatoes, maybe spinach and basil to start with, and then see how I do.

daughter of pearl: Peppers grow slowly, but it's probably not too late. The other plants ... just about the right time to start. I've tried container gardening and herbs and flowers do fine, but I always get a scant harvest out of tomatoes and peppers (except for cherry/pear/grape tomatoes, which may in fact produce fewer fruit, but they're so prolific I probably didn't notice). My suggestion is to use huge containers for these since they have big, ravenous root systems that need lots of space and nutrients. Maybe you'll do better than I did.

I've got a lot winter-sown and dormant on the porch, and a few tender things growing indoors. My baby artichokes will probably need bigger containers in a week or so.

Container gardening tends to need more nutrients so try to add a little fertilizer with each watering or top dress with nutrient rich compost.
