How many cantaloupe and watermelon to expect?
I got a community garden plot - YAY! It will get full sun. So I want to grow cantaloupe and watermelon. I have no idea how many plants to plant. Is it like pumpkins where you typically want only 1 per plant? Thanks! I need to get my seeds started.

Part of it will depend on the size of the plot..........the back of the package will tell you how far apart to space them.
The seed packet will also tell you how long before you will have mature fruit (days to maturity on packet)....make sure your season is long enough for the seeds that you get.
If you were asking how many 'fruit' you will get........that can be different too. You 'should' get more than one fruit per plant. I haven't grown watermelon but have cantaloupe and I usually 'on a slow' year will get three to four fruits per plant.

Thanks frugalfranny - if I start the seeds indoors the growing season is long enough. The plot is 10x20 so there should be plenty of room. I just didn't know how many cantaloupe or watermelon I could expect from 1 plant.

Last year was the first time we grow cantaloupe and watermelon. I can tell you we planted two of each plant. We got a total of 12 cantaloupe and 15 watermelons during our garden season. The cantaloupe ended up climbing up our fence and grow more on it then on the ground. It was neat to see them hanging from the fence. They was so yummy. Good luck with your garden plot.

Keep us posted on how your plot grows.
I have always wondered about the community garden thing...would like to know what you think of it further into the season. I have tons of questions about them....just the community aspect of it. We have a few here but don't know anyone that gardens in them.
One main question---when you get one of these are there 'guidelines' or limitations on what you can grow? Any 'rules' that you have to follow?
I have NO CLUE how they work so was just wondering?!?!

There are rules to the community garden. Such as no loud music, no unsupervised kids, no unattended watering, no chemicals - it has to be organic, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. This is my first year, so I will let y'all know how it goes. I can't wait!
