planting from seeds from food
Can we just plant the seeds that would otherwise be waste from green and red bell peppers from the grocery store?
What, if any, other grocery store foods have plantable seeds that would otherwise be waste?

You can try any of them......but if they are hybrid, which many might be, they won't grow true to form, if they grow.
Give it a shot....wouldn't waste much expensive dirt on them.
Anything with seeds......tomatoes, even apples and lemons if you want a tree. I have done the green peppers and orange.
Got some shriveled potatoes that are sprouting? Plant them.....they probably will grow.

DGD planted a peach pit, probably 20 years ago. To everyone's surprise, it grew into a peach tree with the most delicious peaches every year.

To get good viable seed you need BIG ripe fruit to harvest from. Unfortunately a lot of foods are harvested in a young and tender stage and may not have fully formed seed. It's also important to know when to plant and what your growing seasons are.Use it up, Wear it out,
Make it do, Or do without. ~unknown

If you purchase green onions, you can take the cut-off root end and plant them and grow another.

Last fall , I saved seeds from pumpkins and winter squash. Have not got them in the ground yet, but will sometime soon.
I also take garlic I get from the grocery store, and plant them.
I use leftover potatoes from the prior fall's harvest to plant in the spring garden. Did that last year, and had a real nice crop.
Just did that again this spring, and already have potatoes growing nicely.
Onions I did break down and buy some from the Country Max farm store. We did that last year, and again this spring. I only got the red and whites.
Pea seeds we buy from stores in bulk. I would like to save some and dry them and use for next years seed. The hubby enjoys them raw, and I am thankful to get any for the freezer.
I am thinking of getting a red colored sweet bell pepper from the grocery store sometime soon, and trying to use the seeds in it, to start a few pepper plants. The red pepper is the ripe mature one from the normal green.
My current experimental seeds are a row of green beans that the seeds are from 1992....yup 18 years old. Three different kinds. Like I told the hubby, if they don't germinate, I still have plenty of time to get another veggie planted in that row.

I've got baby jalapeńo seedlings growing from seeds my dad saved the year he died - 1990. His legacy to me seems to be a lifetime supply of jalapeńo peppers.

We have done the pineapple top. It was the cutest and tastiest thing. We have saved but not planted yet some avacado seeds and mango.

A question about the pineapple. Does anyone know once the plant produces a pineapple does it die or will it produce more fruit down the line?

The first one I did produced one fruit, i took that, and it has made much smaller fruits randomly since. The second one I did hasn't fruited at all, lol. The plants are fine, haven't died, but the first one I did looks more houseplany now than an actual fruiting pineapple. Somewhat less vigorous looking.

There's a whole thread about growing pineapples from pineapple tops...
photos of a fruit devloping can be found here:
Surrey Pineapples (My Pineapple plants)
info about growing pineapples here:
How to Grow a Pineapple Top Indoors
Also, there were at least two books in the 70s that talked about growing food from seeds in common veggies and such. I'll see if I can't locate the titles. If I do, I'll post 'em.
IHTH!

Step one is accomplished. We retained pepper seeds instead of tossing them last night.
