    Default My Long Weekend Goodies

    Today was busy!

It was the long weekend this past weekend. Today was Victoria Day, so lots of people usually save their planting for this weekend. We headed out early and I'm glad that we did because it was busy even then. I can't imagine it being busier in the afternoon...

and all we got was two gooseberry bushes and some gardening gloves.

If anyone is planning on planting anything during Memorial Day weekend and going to the greenhouse, I'd go super duper early. I imagine that if we had waited, we also would have missed out on the gooseberry bushes. These are pretty hearty bushes; I'd say they're at least a second or third year bush. There's already berries on them!

(Some of the images are rotated the wrong way, I think.)

The garden setup is being completed tomorrow and that's it! Now I'm gonna need something else to keep me entertained...

When I used to live in Calgary, my planting strategy was to go to the greenhouse place the week before Victoria Day to avoid the crowds, but not to plant anything frost-tender until the first week of June. So many times, there would be an even bigger crowd the weekend after Victoria Day of people trying to replace the tomatoes that bit the dust from a frost a couple of days after Victoria Day.

We've actually been heading out there for the last three weekends in a row. The first weekend, we got the blueberry bushes (they're a bit hardier). The second weekend, we got the raspberries (which we didn't think we'd get anyways). This weekend, it was the gooseberries. They were having a lot of issues with delivery in terms of the weather and gooseberries are insanely popular here. I tried for three weeks to get them.

I have them sitting in their pots outside right now because I'm in the midst of removing wallpaper border, plus it looks like it's gonna rain.
